Probably it could, here is a similar case in which the maintainer decided to apply a fix in the package itself: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1104289 (Note: this is not a recommendation to do that, I'm just pointing out that a workaround does not seem impossible). Thanks.
