My biggest concern is that we end up with lots of packages with hidden undeclared dependency on pkg_resources that only work by luck and the only reliable way to find those would be have more autopkgtest coverage, because setuptools depends on pkg_resources and this kind of bug cannot be found at build time. I will raise this concern to Python Team. PS: please try again the "optuna" autopkgtest in Salsa CI, it should be fine now. Greetings >
