This can probably be solved with a bit more version rewriting as I was able to make that combo work for rebuilding Kotlin, just adding a missing backport in libmaven-resolver-1.6 (see #1091772).
The maven-resolver-1.6 branch is only needed to make it possible to rebuild the build tools that build-depend on themselves until they all work with the newer maven-resolver (IOW even if we patch them to build and work with the newer libs, we need the older branch to be installed on the build system to be able to "bootstrap" these updates). So far these only include Gradle 4.4.1 and this helper.
I will let Emmanuel answer what he actually plans, but personally I would rather keep the newer maven and maven-resolver in sid only until the issues are resolved, I don't think they need to be rushed into testing.
