It turned out that a ']' was placed wrong in configure.ac actually - so an easy (but hard to find) issue in gstreamermm-1.0 ... I still think autoconf is doing a bad job here as it fails with no meaningful error on - as it seems - quite many configure.ac files that worked fine before.
