I also have this problem under sid on alpha.

Running the script directly with /usr/bin/python2.3 instead of /usr/bin/python -> python2.4 works, however, so I suggest the problem is somewhere in python2.4, not bittorrent. That is, running "python2.3 /usr/bin/btdownloadcurses" works correctly as a temporary workaround.
