OK, I have just successfully built vtk 5.0.1 in a pbuilder environment. Perhaps you were trying vtk 4.4.2 and filed a duplicate of bug #379240? Your bug report doesn't say, but since 5.0.1 is still new, I am guessing that you saw the bug on version 4.4.2-10.
