Update: linux-2.6 2.6.17-6 has been built/uploaded using a version of kernel-package that incorporates support for relative paths in kernel-img.conf.
Now only #380351 (in grub-installer) blocks our move back to /usr. Otavio, have you looked at the patch I sent there?
