I've had the exact same problem on my Ubuntu/Dapper, when I'd used [kbuildsycoca] in a 32-bit chroot on my amd64-installation.
After running [kbuildsycoca] again on the native 64-bit installation, kopete runs without problems. It seems to me, that if the need to run kbuildsycoca could be auto-detected, this would be a non-issue (unless of course this merely is the symptom of some other problem - I honestly don't know).
