I can confirm that the package builds successfully with this patch applied as an alternative. The logo in the resulting manual.pdf appears visually identical between this patch and the previous approach. In addition: the document's index (on page 43) seems more visually neat and concise to me with the updated v3 LaTeX base doc.sty file, so I would vote for the '0001-Set-nohyperref-to-fix-FTBFS.patch' patch (from the two options) on that basis.
