Package: dh-python
Version: 5.20230130
Severity: serious

Dear maintainer:

While upgrading a Debian server from Debian 9 to Debian 10,
then from Debian 10 to Debian 11 and then from Debian 11
to bookworm, the following error happened:

Preparing to unpack .../dh-python_5.20230130_all.deb ...
Unpacking dh-python (5.20230130) over (3.20190308) ...
dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/dh-python_5.20230130_all.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite '/usr/share/debhelper/autoscripts/postinst-pycompile',
which is also in package python2 2.7.16-1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/dh-python_5.20230130_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Note that I didn't skip any upgrade, so this should work.

Thanks.

Are you sure? From the versions above it looks like you directly
upgraded from buster to bookworm while skipping bullseye.

Big oops! You are absolutely right.

The problem is that it was in an old virtual machine which I had around
in GCP on which I decided to test the upgrade before removing it.

I've now double-checked in a new virtual machine and now the
upgrade worked as expected.

[ I believe what happened is that I did "apt-get upgrade" every time
but forgot "apt-get dist-upgrade" at some point ]

Sorry for the false alarm.

Thanks a lot.
