after more trying I found out, that when I give --debootstrap, the command finished, seemingly successfully.
This is nowhere documented - every example on the web and in the manpage is without that option, and I would assume that the scripts "knows" itself when to use debootstrap and when to use rpmstrap - it's quite redundant to force users giving this info - it is already clear from the given distribution.
