Hello Paul,
From the Kino site at SourceForge I got the following response to my
complaint. As you can see from this report Dan Dennedy blames the problem on
libavcodec!
Maybe it can be of some help to you.

Summary: Kino fails to open file and freezes
Initial Comment:
Kino cannot open files and freezes. These files can
be dv files or project files. Sometimes the first
file can be opened, but then Kino freezes when trying
to open a second or third file.
When started from a console the error messages are:
>> Trying XVideo at 720x576
>>> XvQueryAdaptors count: 2
>>> Xv: NV Video Overlay: ports 65 - 65
>>> formats supported: 4
>>> 0x32595559 (YUY2) packed

>>> 0x30323449 (I420) planar
>>> 0: XV_IMAGE, 2046x2046 rate = 1/1
Kino experienced a segmentation fault.

Done dumping - exiting.
I use version 0.9.0 from Debian testing. The package
Kino was updated today, with the older package
(0.8.1?) all files could be opened.
The error makes Kino unusable.

This is a build-related problem with ffmpeg/libavcodec.
