Actually, yes. Turns out that I'm stupid. The first patch did fix
everything without breaking the program, but I inserted an
rl_redisplay() in a wrong place and it introduced a bug in my
devolopment/testing tree. So I thought there was a bug breaking the
program behaviour, but there wasn't actually.

I prepared a new upload including the patch [1] I sent to upstream.
Would you be able to review it and upload if everything is okay?
Thanks again for helping me with this issue.

This patch produced a compilation error so I sent another patch to
upstream (and included it in the upload) [2], but he hasn't responded
yet.
