I guess this is a matter of confusing file descriptors at some point;
syslog-ng opens /dev/null a number of places.
Anyhow, could you please try the version in unstable? You are reporting the
bug against the version in sarge, and it would probably be useful to know if
this affected unstable or not.

Sorry, I can't try the unstable package because it's for our mail
cluster in production.
However, I built a package based on the version 1.6.11 and i haven't
got the problem anymore.
