I can confirm this happening.  This is absolutely absurd.  Debian is supposed to produce a _stable_ operating system, is it not?  To the best of my understanding, that is why the included packages are often of older versions of software: to maintain and ensure security and stability.  I find it absolutely incomprehensible as to why a package, 'out of the box,' just completely fails and segfaults.  If the nature of the package is such that, it is bound to not work due to API changes in the service it interacts with, it should NOT be included.  The only possibly way to remedy this problem in a timely fashion, is for the package provider to fix the problem immediately, and at this point, for the user to be able to compile that new version from source; which completely negates any reason AT ALL for this to be a Debian package; as the user should not be required to do that, and the Operating System providing the package, can't reliably update the package appropriately, assuming that developer even fixes the problem at all.
