Followup-For: Bug #372782
As a followup, I installed cups-pdf. This works fine. Obviously the problem
is with CUPS communicating with the printers themselves.
This was first tested after a complete purge of all CUPS components (which
took out many dependent apps too), followed by reinstallation.
Printconf properly ID'd the HP 1200 (parallel). The HP still does not respond
to print jobs supposedly processed by CUPS. Neither CUPS itself nor printconf
properly saw the Epson R300 at this point (printconf doesn't see it at all).
All attempts to redefine the Epson URI to something like
usb:/dev/usb/lp0
or
usb:/dev/.static/dev/usb/lp0
or
epson:(same as above)
failed to work.
SUCCESS with the Epson! I removed a local.rules definition for udev, which
had the form:
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{serial}=="M16P20407291006080", SYSFS{manufacturer}==
"EPSON", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cards"
Now the printer shows up properly, I've added it, and printerd out a test
sheet. Whew. When I tried printconf, it stated that the printer is
unsupported by the gimp-print driver. I have it matched with the gutenprint
ppd file.
Both printers are seen by hwinfo (I don't recall if this was in the original
report).
