Hi,

 some weeks ago: install of linux-image-2.6.16-1-amd64
        Presumed states:
          initrd.img ->initrd.img-2.6.16-1-amd64

 dist-upgrading

 manual install of self-compiled linux-image-2.6.17-rc6 (without initrd)

        Presumed states:
          initrd.img.old ->initrd.img-2.6.16-1-amd64
 reinstall of linux-image-2.6.16-1-amd64

        No change.

 deinstall of linux-image-2.6.17-rc6

        No Change.
 today: install of linux-image-2.6.16-2-amd64
        Presumed states:
          initrd.img -> initrd.img-2.6.16-2-amd64
          initrd.img.old -> initrd.img-2.6.16-1-amd64

        If you are using grub, why are you not using update-grub? That
 would work out of the box. What is calling grub-install?

        What is the content of /boot? Did the initrd image actually
 get created? If not, were there any errors during install?

        With some more information, ths report can be acted upon.
 Lacking it, it is likely to languish for a bit, and then get closed.

        manoj
