I think we are confusing two different bugs here. One might well argue that
not having Perl embedded in GiFT is a problem, but it is certainly not RC,
since it has never worked in any Debian package and the program should work
fine without. In other words, what concerns this bug is the FTBFS with gcc
4.1; a separate bug should probably be opened for the Perl issue (which, BTW,
might be solvable using the right set of #defines, as the "#define readdir"
part depends on several other #defines being set).

In other words, I'll be NMUing with the non-Perl related patches in this
thread; that should fix the issue nicely.
