Looking at the initscript Patrick included in his message, and the one shipped with the package, it looks he added this line:
PARAMS="-m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd" However, according to man start-stop-daemon, -m does not take an argument. So, my guess is that start-stop-daemon is failing do to this addition.
