No, up to now it was specifically allowed for legacy reasons. When that was removed, it falls back to normal argument syntax. Extensions which begin with "-" meet the syntax guidelines, but extensions which begin with "+" do not. Again, this is to reduce surprise for users, who are told "posix command arguments begin with '-'".

Of course, if you prefer that I discuss this with upstream, I could do
that. However, I believe that the proper way to deal with requests is to
discuss that with the Debian maintainer(s), and only if they tell
someone to speak with upstream, do it.

I already did so--I have absolutely no interest in debating this.
