That's simply not true. Solaris has obsolete syntax in /usr/bin, and more modern syntax in /usr/xpg4/bin. So, for example, /usr/xpg4/bin/tail -n 2 will work even if /usr/bin/tail -n 2 doesn't. That's been true since at least solaris 2.5, which was end-of-lifed in 1999. This sounds to me more like not understanding solaris' path structure than an actual issue. HP/UX has been supporting -n syntax and calling +N syntax obsolete at least since version 10. AIX since at least 4.something. The -n syntax was a part of the older POSIX release, so anything calling itself POSIX 1992 compliant should be able to support it.
