This makes it sound like a window manager problem of some kind, but I can't tell for sure. What exactly are you doing to invoke gnucash? And can you send me a copy of the data file (send it separately to my address if you don't want it posted in the public bug log)? Have previous versions of the 1.9.* series worked for you, or is this the first one you've tried? When it is in the not-working state, if you use the Gnome "window selector" panel applet, can you see it there?
