I'm having trouble understanding just what's happening.  From your
report, it sounds like gnucash is still running at this point (since
you say that strace is still printing output).  This makes it sound
like a window manager problem of some kind, but I can't tell for sure.

What exactly are you doing to invoke gnucash?  And can you send me a
copy of the data file (send it separately to my address if you don't
want it posted in the public bug log)?

Have previous versions of the 1.9.* series worked for you, or is this
the first one you've tried?

When it is in the not-working state, if you use the Gnome "window
selector" panel applet, can you see it there?  Likewise, check the
multiple workspace applet, perhaps the window is popping up in an
unexpected workspace?
