What a coincidence that you should ask today - same exact day that a new release of Squeak Etoys was released after 10 years of development: http://www.squeakland.org/download/ So no, I think the package should not be removed but upgraded :-) Thanks for asking, though - it is tricky to keep track of the Etoys and Squeak and Sugarlabs and OLPC resources, it is as if each fraction considers itself the center piece and does not reference activities happening at the other parts.
