Package: udev
Version: 0.091-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

When I tried to upgrade to udev 0.092-1, my system would no longer boot.
My initramfs was regenerated with the same configuration and kernel that
I have been using successfully for some time. On boot, the kernel
recognized my hard disks/partitions as usual and then printed a message:

Can't find /dev/sda3 (or something to that effect)
  Waiting for root file system

Then, I got a busybox root prompt. I have a Thinkpad T43 with a
SATA/PATA controller; my hard drive appears as a SCSI device. My
/etc/mkinitramfs/modules file contains:

  libata atapi_enabled=1
  ata_piix
  scsi_mod
  sd_mod

Downgrading to udev 0.091-2 fixed the problem.

I noticed the changelog says:

  * Removed support for kernels older than 2.6.15: udevsynthesize has
    been replaced by udevtrigger.

So perhaps this is the problem (I haven't tested a newer kernel).

It took a while to figure out which package was causing the problems (I
was playing with initramfs stuff for a while). Perhaps the new udev
package should refuse to install with older kernels, since it has the
potential to render systems unbootable.

Thanks.
