So it seems, but I don't know why. Can you please set "DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer" in your pbuilder chroot (usually by editing pbuilderrc, there's usually a line in it with export DEBIAN_FRONTEND="noninteractive" just add a second line exporting the DEBUG setting. Then repeat the build, and send us the log file. Hey, Debian TeX Task Force: I'm quite sure I've given similar instructions recently to somebody reporting a similar bug, but I can find neither the question, nor an answer. Or did I only want to?
