Thanks Rob. For what it's worth, I now tested the patch and I think it is ready to go for Buster: - it does fix the RC bug (tested); - I think the approach is sound; - for this approach, the patch is minimal. It doesn't do anything that is not required to fix the bug. As a bonus, it can go through unstable. Kind regards, Thibaut.
