Follow-up comment: it's my understanding that this failure means the debconf
frontend failed before it had a chance to re-exec the postinst script.
Given that debconf hasn't changed recently and this is the only package
people are reporting problems with, this suggests there's an issue with the
debconf templates provided by xserver-xorg.
