Yes, sorry. There were various posts on r-sig-debian (mostly from Ubuntu users) and a ticket on the ess github repo (ditto) to the same extent. The change required for emacs 26 seems to have left the other emacsen behind. Good news though: The (overdue) move to an 'elpa-ess' package has happened, and it is as 17.11-4 in 'experimental' (I was debating dropping it into 'unstable'). That new package seems to install fine for everyone, including the Ubuntu users.
