autotools are mature and widely used, there is nothing bad about using them.

meson is the shiny new tool. It is still evolving with slight breakages here and there, but already used widely enough to limit the amount of breakage that can happen. Depending on your personal preferences either would be a good choice, but doing both would bring you double work and double bugs for no benefit.

This parallelism bug in nx-libs I will close for now with --no-parallel everywhere in debian/rules after some futile attempts on the upstream side to get the Makefile dependency tree fixed. I have now started working in the autotools port of nxagent Xserver.
