Just finished 6 passes of memtest86 on my PC, it reported zero errors on my RAM, so this is not the problem.
Some people report that they got their first memtest error after 24 hours, so this is no proof.
Do you have another system where firefox works? If yes, can your tell what the difference between these system are? (Hardware, libraries mozilla depends on, etc)? I'd like to find out how to reproduce it. And it works on all of my systems.
And what about thunderbird? It would be enough if you add a news server account for example news.gmane.org and try to read some random newsgroup.
Have you checked your logfiles and dmesg output? Do you get any strange messages when you start firefox from command-line?
