Ah, I see, I didn't pay attention to the version.  I still am not able
to reproduce it though in a sarge chroot.  dropbear from the manually
unpacked deb from
http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/d/dropbear/dropbear_0.45-2sarge0_amd64.deb
worked as well as a new build on sarge.  Maybe my test is wrong?

eyck.debian, can you try the steps to reproduce I did in my last mail,
does that fail for you?  What if you rebuild the package on your current
sarge system, does it work then?

 $ apt-get source -b dropbear
