Could this have started happening when you updated to libssl0.9.7
0.9.7e-3sarge1 (released in november but possibly updated at your site
later than that)? And could it be that the imap-server was not
restartet since that library update?

If using aptitude (which is much recommended over the use of apt-get)
you may be able to extract update info from /var/log/aptitude.

Thanks for the pointer, but it indeed seems from that report that the
bug is 0.9.8-specific (due to zlib not activated in 0.9.7).
