Because the check for X is failing, which means all subsequent X-related
checks (including Xext) fail *regardless* of what other packages are
installed, because the include and lib paths haven't been set.

It's likely that this is fixable by either re-autotooling with the latest
autoconf, or build-depending on libxt-dev.
