The reason for this:

              [ "$md5sum" = "$old_md5sum" ] && rm -f "$CONFFILE"

This line always returns false (1) when $md5sum != $old_md5sum.

Since this script is set -e (as expected), you want instead:

              [ "$md5sum" != "$old_md5sum" ] || rm -f "$CONFFILE"
