While I agree that it is unfortunate that the current version of libmtp is
outdated and does not support recent Android devices, I disagree about the
stance that the package is "unusable". The package works fine "as is" and
the fact that not all modern hardware is supported by a Debian stable release
is expected. And since Debian testing is currently frozen, there is little to
no chance that libmtp can be updated before the release.

If you still want to try to get the package updated, it would be helpful if
you could provide a debdiff with the changes between 1.1.12-1 and 1.1.13-1
of libmtp. You could then ask the release team for an exception to get libmtp
updated before the Stretch release.

In case updating libmtp before the Stretch release should not be possible, it
will still be possible to provide an updated version of the library through
strech-backports or in one of the Stretch point updates.
