Hi Julian (and anybody else reading this bugreport), I have a testing versions ready here: https://packages.sury.org/mariadb/ The repository provides updated package for jessie and updated package for stretch.
I have tested it in a clean system in all ways I could imagine, and it looks to me it works very well, but I would really appreciate if somebody else could test this as well.
