Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: serious
Justification: falsly rejects packages
Dear ftp-masters,
I recently learned that an upcoming upload of TeX Live 2015 to the
archive will be auto-rejected due to the following non-overridable
lintian error:
E: texlive-extra source: license-problem-md5sum-non-free-file
texmf-dist/tex/latex/pdfx/sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_black_scaled.icc usual name is
sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_black_scaled.icc. Does not allow modification See also
https://packages.debian.org/sid/icc-profiles.
The problem here is that the icc profiles as packaged in icc-profiles are
outdated
and use a incorrect license statement, while the TeX Live files, and several
other projects (eg pdf libraries) ship the icc profiles with the correct
ICC license statement according to the current status. (TL contains
a current ICC_Licenses file)
I assume that the decision on a non-overridable lintian error was
made based on the license statement in the icc-package, which
reads:
*******************
Files: sRGB_* ISO22028*
Copyright: International Color Consortium <icc_us...@lists.color.org>
License: ICC
To anyone who acknowledges that the files
"sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_no_black_scaling.icc" and
"sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_black scaled.icc" are provided "AS IS" WITH NO
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY, permission to use, copy and distribute
these file for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided
that the files are not changed including the ICC copyright notice
tag, and that the name of ICC shall not be used in advertising or
publicity pertaining to distribution of the software without
specific, written prior permission. ICC makes no representations
about the suitability of this software for any purpose.
*******************
But the current status has changed, and the web site of the
International Color Consortium now reads as follows:
http://www.color.org/profiles2.xalter
**************************
Licensing
The copyright owner and terms of use of an ICC profile are normally identified
in the Creator field in the profile header and in the Copyright tag. Where ICC
is the copyright owner, the following license terms apply:
"This profile is made available by the International Color Consortium, and may
be copied, distributed, embedded, made, used, and sold without restriction.
Altered versions of this profile shall have the original identification and
copyright information removed and shall not be misrepresented as the original
profile."
***************************
Paul Wise mentioned in his remarks on the lintian bug 786946 that the *new*
license does not allow for modifications, which I consider an "interesting"
interpretation, since the second sentence clearly states that
Altered versions of this profile ...
which can of course only exist if modifications are allowed.
Anyway, at least several OSS projects seem to have no problem with this
license, thus I ask for a clarification from side of the ftp-masters, as
requested by Bastien Roucaries in the above mentioned bug report
against lintian.
Thanks a lot for your work and all the best
Norbert
