The problem is that if you install *just* libmariadbclient-dev (but NOT default-libmysqlclient-dev + libmariadbclient-dev-compat) then `pkg-config --libs mariadb` as well as `mysql_config --libs` return invalid data (as present and hardcoded in /usr/share/pkgconfig/mariadb.pc + /usr/bin/mysql_config), as stated and demoed in my initial bug report. regards, -mika-
