I agree with fixing the buggy behavior in encfs. I created an encfs paranoid folder and use cryptkeeper to open it without issues in Stretch.
If someone creates one through cryptkeeper they will discover the problem quickly. That being said, I agree having a program with known bad behavior (cryptkeeper) is not preferred but the cause appears to come from another application. Tony
