Ran an aptitude update - linux-image-2.6.15-1-k7 updated. Rebooted as advised (since it's the same version as the running kernel under update). During boot it states that it can't find /dev/hda2 and drops back to busybox. /dev/hda2 is my root & boot partition. 2.6.12-1-k7 still boots OK. Notes - this is a standard deb kernel with initrd and udev booting from grub.
