Package: doomlegacy-sdl
Version: 1.41release-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.2
"Every package in contrib and non-US/contrib must comply with the DFSG."
debian-policy, 2.2.2
Doom legacy incorporates code taken from the heretic and hexen programs, which
are distributed under a strict licence which I do not believe is compatible
with the GPL.
Please find attached
1) DOOMLIC.TXT - the original licence that doom was distributed under, prior
to being GPL'd
2) End User License Hexen Source Code.doc.gz - the heretic/hexen licence
(gzipped) as originally written.
3) LICENCE - the heretic/hexen licence, converted to UTF-8 text format by
myself for convenient reading by interested parties. Please note that
whilst I tried to convert this accurately I can't take responsibility for
innaccuracies or mistakes. Read the one above if required.
I believe that the heretic/hexen source code licence is incompatible with the
GPL and so this package cannot be distributed as part of main or contrib.
I believe that the ideal solution is for raven/activision to relicence the
heretic/hexen source code under the GPL - this would have wide ramifications
and allow the potential inclusion of other doom engines in main. However, in
the meantime this package needs to be dealt with. I think there are two
options:
1) the author(s) of legacy to re-licence under the doom licence (attached). I
believe that this licence, whilst still non-free, is compatible with the
raven one. Thus the resulting package could be included in non-free.
2) roll-back the package to a CVS version prior to the inclusion of the
heretic/hexen source code. This is very undesirable and perhaps impossible,
but would result in legacy in contrib (soon main but thats a different
issue).
