Hello Aaron, thanks a lot for reporting the bug and for the hint on how to solve the issue, it's much appreciated! It seems my pbuilder-based setup was not properly tuned to detect the issue during my first round of packaging, but I have switched to sbuild (--no-arch-all) and have been able to replicate the problem.
As mentioned on the auto-generated mail, I'm preparing a new release with hopefully includes a fix for this bug [1].
