There are a lot of old and unsupported parts of the Staden Package (eg that eba tool), so it doesn't suprise me newer compiler options throw up warnings. I assume this is now an issue due to -Werror=format-security. The append_int function is entirely my fault though and recent. Sorry. I should go through the package with a modern gcc and stress test it locally. I can't support the old legacy bits, but at the very least they should be able to compile. Thanks for the bug report.
