 argh!  it actually works!  unmaintained _can_ mean "it's so stable
that it doesn't need maintaining"... but there's a fork... so..

... hexchat seems to recommend gvfs (which is part of gnome, which i
don't want).  fortunately it's possible to do "apt-get
--without-recommends install hexchat"
