i was hit by this also.
I saw this too:
fmtutil [ERROR]: running `pdftex -ini -jobname=mptopdf -progname=context
-translate-file=cp227.tcx mptopdf.tex </dev/null' return status 1
fmtutil [ERROR]: return error due to options --strict
After lurking around in /var/lib/dpkg/info/ i found this:
,----[ /var/lib/dpkg/info/tex-common.postinst ]--------
FMTUTIL="fmtutil --sys --strict --no-error-if-no-engine=luajittex"
`-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dropped the '--strict' from there and then was at least able to get apt/dpkg
back in sane state.
Please note this is NOT meant as fix. This is only a workaround to finish
upgrade process, without leaving to many half-configured packages around.
