Yep, raised this upstream 
https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/issues/2258/unable-to-translate-pypy-50-with-jit-on-a

And addressed it in 5.0.1+dfsg-1 by building pypy with pypy.

That caused an immediate B-D uninstallability problem, which will be
addressed in -2, by making pypy-lib arch-dep.
