https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=790403 , whose
solution turned out to be setting TMPDIR and HOME to writable
directories within the build tree.
(Builds on some architectures have been failing earlier; I'll report
those bugs separately.)
