Unfortunately it does compile but it doesn't work. With kernel 4.3 I get a black screen with a flashing cursor.
I wasn't able to find the ubuntu patch you're referring but there is a new amd driver[1] that may solve the problem. I've tried to build deb packages using amd software but their scripts have some issues and I didn't investigate further.
