This release was supposed to be API and ABI compatible according to release notes. Unfortunately we seem to mess that up in the name of reproducible builds in Debian, but I'm not sure that's the full story. Anyway, I filed a bug report requesting a transition slot. Renaming the library and rebuilding reverse dependencies seems to be the way this got handled the last time around so I think it should be good enough this time as well.
