Thank you for the thorough testing! I think this is a bug in dbconfig-common; from a quick glance over its documentation the pdns package does exactly what the dbconfig-common docs say it should be doing, and nevertheless it's now buggy. For now I'll add the mysql-client (and other) dependencies to the pdns package, but I'm wondering if dbconfig-common has become a "bad smell" and extensive default configuration has become a disservice to our users.
